“Can We Save the World with Engineering?” Through this SURVEY LINK, St. Paul’s Lower School Discovery Center fourth graders seek to connect with other students around the world in order to learn and share real challenges which can be solved using the various engineering disciplines.

Project/event directions for participation:

Ever-expanding their own world view, these fourth graders began thinking about the real-life problems they might encounter in the Discovery Center, throughout the Lower School, in their local communities and now, around the world! They first created Voki avatars to voice their personal ideas. Then their teams canvassed St. Paul’s teachers and administrators through a Global Celebration Day scavenger hunt. But to reach out to global learning communities, over the next month they want to share through post a few of their problem-solving projects and related engineering disciplines; and hope in return their peers world-wide will collaborate, through short messages, photos, creative art, etc.

Project/event description:

We are "hosting" an event through a Padlet (where people from all over the world can post videos, pictures, text boxes, that relate to the following question): "What's your personal spark? What makes you- -you?" In the words of Dr. Suess, "Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you." What makes you special? Students from all over the world will share their "sparks" or qualities they are proud of within themselves. Students will see examples from all over the world and build intercultural awareness and respect for each other!

Project/event directions for participation:

Find creative or simple ways to elicit from students, staff, families etc. what makes them special! Post a video, photo, thought etc. on the Padlet link. Then check back to review and share with your students how people's sparks are similar and different throughout the world. Great discussion starting point for valuing people's individual strengths and building appreciation for others and our own talents!

Survey online here: https://goo.gl/llloqf and also it can be found here: http://bit.ly/1UTTOTV

Project/event description:

Julie Lindsay is undertaking this research project as part of a Doctor of Education degree through the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. The purpose of this research is to document and analyse the experiences of K-12 educators who are implementing online global collaboration and to describe pedagogical approaches that may be influencing pedagogical change. Online global collaboration broadly refers to educators using digital technologies to connect students with others beyond their immediate learning environment for collaborative outcomes. Online technologies provide new ways of connecting and collaborating with others and it is educators’ beliefs about and practices with the use of educational technology that will be explored to analyse how these influence their engagement with online global collaboration.

Project/event directions for participation:

Educators who teach K-12 levels from across the world who are implementing online global collaboration are invited to complete this online survey. Access one of the URLs as a starting point - this will lead you to the online survey. Completion of this survey will take approximately 30-40 minutes (if all parts are completed). The survey is in three parts: - Part A: Demographic information - Part B: Online learning and online global collaboration information - Part C: Interest in participating in further research and further questions for 'Phase 2: Case Study' eligibility (optional)

Title of event/project:

BABELIUM: ICT-Based learning trainning for foreign language speaking skill

URL to project/event starting point:

http://babeliumproject.com/gcd.html

Project/event description:

Babelium: We can only learn to speak by speaking! The Tower of Babel is a well-known story that portrays the challenge that multilingual communication can create. This story provided the inspiration for the name given to Babelium, a project that is promoted and co-funded by the European Commission within the Leonardo da Vinci frame of the Lifelong Learning Programme. Nowadays the need to speak a second language is becoming more of a necessity in our multicultural society. Babelium has been developed to address this need and promote language learning. Babelium is a collaborative platform to practice your second language oral skills using interactive videos. Using Babelium is quite simple What are our aims? Language skills can be essential when dealing with foreign clients and colleagues. Students doing an Erasmus or internship abroad also need these skills. Moreover, speaking the language of a country can make visiting it much more rewarding and can sometimes be vital for circumstances when we are in need of help. With this in mind, we want to make your learning of languages easier and more efficient by developing an online resource that can be adapted to fit your schedule. This resource can also be used as an additional tool for language teachers who want to make their classes more interesting and varied. In both cases Babelium focuses on developing oral expression skills in language learning. Who can use Babelium? Babelium is for anyone who wants or needs to improve their oral language skills. It can also be used by language teachers seeking an efficient tool to aid their students’ learning. Using an open and free license Babelium and all the video-exercises developed are available to everyone, including: • Managers and employees who need to deal with foreign clients and workers • Students who need to prepare for an internship or study abroad • Immigrants who want to integrate quickly into their new community • People of all ages who want to travel abroad and learn more about different cultures by communicating with the local people in their language • Teachers and trainers looking for an effective didactic tool to help develop speaking skills. This programme is designed to be used by anyone who wants to practice speaking the language they are learning. As we all know: we can only learn to speak by speaking! So try it out and discover what Babelium can do for you! Let your staff or students know! How does it work? You will need a computer that is equipped with a microphone (and, optionally, with a webcam). Many of us now have this technology at home. For instructions access: http://babeliumproject.com/gcd.html Once you log in, you can start working with people you know, for example, your teacher and fellow students, or you can meet new people on the platform. These people may be native or non-native speakers but they will all be there to learn and will help you towards achieving your own learning objectives.

By immersing in a learning process that incorporates professional inquiry and introspection, we can reflect of the incompleteness of our own ways of interpreting the world, examine internalized biases, and renew our focus to engage with empathy and compassion. Watch our video presentation for ideas on how to develop long-distance professional partnerships and innovative projects via in person meetings and the use of technology. LINEglobal connects and supports dynamic, innovative partnerships between educators in the USA and India. Welcome to our website!
